Opened on 15 May 1938 is this Southern Railway Type 13 box at Templecombe measuring 31' x 12' and elevated 9' with an overall length of 54' including relay room. Templecombe has had a chequered history but the signalbox has remained now serving a dual purpose as a ticket office as well as a signalbox. 29 September 2008. Looking quite spruce is the 16 lever Westinghouse A2 frame, block shelf and diagram at Templecombe. 29 September 2009. Originally opened with a 60 lever Westinghouse A2 frame Templecombe has seen significant rationalisation over the years, so much so the frame was reduced to just 16 levers in the 1960's. 29 September 2008. One of the Tokenless Block instruments in Templecombe signalbox, this is for the 'Up Reversible' to Yeovil Junction. 29 September 2008. The blockshelf and illuminated diagram in Templecombe box. Three Tokenless Block instruments cn be seen on the shelf below the diagram, to the right the Gillingham instrument, centre is to Yeovil Junction along the down main and to the right the up reversible to Yeovil Junction. The present layout was introduced on 02 April 1967 as part of the singling of the route. 29 September 2009. The panel at Chard Junction. During November 2009 this is due for complete replacement with a new NX panel as part of the new Axminster Loop which will be controlled from here. 17 August 2009. Chard Junction panel. As part of the new Axminster Loop project this panel will be replaced in November 2009 with a new NX panel to control the new loop. The new panel will be larger than the present panel, this requiring the end wall to be removed to allow the new panel to be craned in. 17 August 2009. Only about four months left in use for the crossing box at Axminster. Located in the station building on the down platform this location will be abolished once the Axminster loop is commissioned with control of the crossing passed over to Chard Junction who will operate/monitor it by CCTV. The new loop at Axminster will allow SouthWest Trains to run an hourly service to Exeter from the December 2009 timetable change. 17 August 2009. Like Feniton this is not a block post and is an intermediate crossing box between Honiton and Chard Junction, the crossing keeper upon hearing the approach alarm lowering the barriers and clearing the appropriate signals. 17 August 2009. Gillingham box working Tokenless Block with Salisbury and Templecombe. The box can be switched out of circuit, the single line section then lengthened to Templecombe from Wilton Junction. Templecombe also has the facility to switch out effectively creating an incredibly long single line section from Wilton Junction to Yeovil Junction, a distance of some 36 miles with one passing point at Tisbury. 17 August 2009. The Southern Region illuminated diagram at Gillingham. The basic crossing loop came into operation on 02 April 1967, the Shell Star Siding added on 12 January 1969 and finally on the 29 February 1976 the Engineers Siding G.F was brought into use. 17 August 2009. The 30 lever Westinghouse A3 frame at Gillingham (Dorset). 17 August 2009. The small panel at Exmouth Junction. The two monitors to the right of the panel are for the CCTV crossings at Pinhoe (top monitor) and also at Topsham (lower monitor). 18 August 2009. When originally built Exmouth Junction housed a 64 lever Westinghouse A3 frame. 03 January 1988 saw the frame removed, this small panel being brought into operation from 15 February 1988. The area of control also taking over the area controlled by Pinhoe box which closed at the same time as the panel was commissioned and also Topsham on the Exmouth branch. 18 August 2009. The B.R (S.R) Type 16 box at Honiton opened on 16 June 1957 at 20' 5 The 24 lever Westinghouse A3 frame in use at Honiton. 07 September 2009. The Western Region style illuminated diagram at Honiton. This basic layout came into use on 11 June 1967 following the singling of the line. 07 September 2009. Plenty of evidence of B.R (W.R) influence in Honiton box when they took over the line from the Southern Region such as the Tokenless Block instruments, lever leads and the Western Region style diagram. 07 September 2009. Typical of most LSWR signalling schemes Yeovil Junction was no exception being fitted with a Stevens frame of 60 levers in total. Today the former LSWR box looks more like a Western Region box with a 45 lever 5-Bar VT frame and all the other fittings of Western Region standard. 08 September 2009. Yeovil Junction signalbox. Under the original Western Region scheme to single the line from Salisbury to Exeter the single line was from Sherborne to Chard Junction, this being introduced from 07 May 1967. However this section of single line was short lived following an incident at Sherborne with an overnight down paper train and from 10 October 1967 the down line was re-instated at Sherborne through to Yeovil Junction, however Yeovil Junction was still to only have a single through platform face until 26 March 1973 when the now 'Up Passenger Loop' was introduced, this previously being used as a bay platform from Yeovil Pen Mill. 08 September 2009. The branch from Yeovil Junction to Yeovil South Junction was formerly double track. However with the abolition of Yeovil South Junction and singalling of the line from Yeovil Junction now to Yeovil Pen Mill this Electric Key Token (EKT) instrument was brought into use on 26 May 1968. 08 September 2009. Yeovil Junction signalbox interior. The layout and signalling here has seen many changes and alterations over the years, the box even being temporarily closed on 10 September 1967 to allow the new 5-Bar VT frame to be fitted, the box being re-opened on 01 October 1967. The present layout and signalling arrangements were brought into use on 26 March 1975 with minor alterations two years later when the connection into the down sidings was altered. 08 September 2009. Thought to be only the second Class 60 to work a scheduled cross-country service train from Bournemouth fell upon 60062 37 at Didcot. 28 April 1992. The 60 lever Westinghouse A2 frame in Bournemouth signalbox. 20 levers were spare (painted white) and 40 in use (painted red - signals, or black - points). The box closed on 13 December 2003 following the opening of a new signalling centre at Bournemouth situated in the former parcels office on Platform 3. 01 May 1992. Still attached to the mains and still in full working order is this gas lamp in the now closed signalbox at Bournemouth. The lamp was still used on a near daily basis by the signalmen who preferred their box to be lit by gas rather than electric, the lamp giving off a lovely glow. 01 May 1992. Visiting locomotive to the Severn Valley Railway's 1992 diesel gala sees 56014 at Kidderminster Town with the 09:50 to Bridgnorth. 10 May 1992. Who would have imagined seeing a Deltic on cross-country services from Ramsgate of all places? Here 55022 37429 37240 standing at Aberdeen with Pathfinder Tours 'The Grampian Highlander' tour. 07 August 1994. Standing at Aberdeen is 37240 whilst beyond is 37087 paired with 37113 which had arrived on 1S79 21:53 Euston-Aberdeen. 37240 was working 'Pathfinder Tours' marathon tour from Bristol to Wick and Thurso 'The Grampian Highlander' and was berthed at Aberdeen overnight before continuing the following morning. 07 August 1994. As part of 'The Grampian Highlander' tour Class 56 haulage was booked to work the train south from Aberdeen. Here 56101 approaches the stock prior to departure as 1Z18 09:30 Aberdeen-Bristol T.M. 07 August 1994. Standing at Edinburgh Waverley is 37088 Preparing to head south from Edinburgh Waverley is 90135 with Pathfinder Tours 'The Grampian Highlander' running as 1Z18 09:30 Aberdeen-Bristol T.M. 07 August 1994. Raifreight Distribution liveried Class 90 No. 90046 stands at Manchester Piccadilly. 22 July 1990. The first ever visit of a Class 37 onto the Weymouth Quay line sees 37038 pass over Kings Street and down towards Commercial Road as part of a test run to prove the class were suitable for the route prior to regular workings along this now closed section of railway. 25 March 1993. 73109 Passing Bournemouth is 73129 Stabled at Carlisle is 37194 between duties. This locomotive is still in mainline use and is operated by DRS. 02 May 1989. 47705 stands at Newbury prior to departure with 1F73 16:35 Newbury-Paddington. 21 June 1991.
